Bernd Pohlmann-Eden, MD, PhD
Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Toronto
Professor of Neurology at Mannheim Hospital, University of Heidelberg
Dr Bernd Pohlmann-Eden is a Canadian-German neuroscientist based in Toronto, Canada. He currently holds appointments as Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Toronto, Canada, and as Professor of Neurology at Mannheim Hospital, University of Heidelberg, Germany. From 2002 to 2007, he was Medical Director and Chair of the Epilepsy Centre Bethel-Bielefeld in Germany. In his role as Director of the Epilepsy Program at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada, he developed new portals of care with a focus on early intervention and prospective cohorts. Under his leadership, the Halifax First Seizure Clinic flourished into an internationally recognized model of strategic innovation.
Dr Pohlmann-Eden’s research interests within neuroscience range from clinical epileptogenesis to brain network diseases and the overlap of neurological and psychiatric brain circuit disorders. He is driven by the vision to make the patient the expert and to optimize knowledge transfer. In this context, he developed a new innovative cognitive and behavioral science-based communication tool for patients, informed by lessons from the aviation industry (cross-industry thinking). Dr Pohlmann-Eden enthusiastically supports new concepts in eHealth with a focus on education and open science publishing. He has been an investigator in numerous clinical trials including the largest global epilepsy multicenter trial, the KOMET study. He delivers lectures worldwide and has authored more than 200 research papers.
